Twinkle Khanna Criticizes Zomato’s “Pure Veg” Label, Citing Concerns of Caste Connotations

Author and former actress Twinkle Khanna has spoken out against Zomato’s labeling of restaurants as “Pure Veg,” expressing concerns about the connotations of caste, hierarchy, and untouchability associated with the term. Khanna’s comments come amidst a debate sparked by Zomato’s recent announcement regarding the introduction of a “Pure Veg” tag on its platform. In a series of tweets, Twinkle Khanna questioned the use of the term “Pure Veg,” suggesting that it perpetuates outdated notions of purity and impurity associated with food choices. She emphasized the need for inclusive language that does not reinforce caste-based discrimination or social hierarchies.

Mrs. Khanna compared two words – “scalpel” or a “dagger,” based on their intended use and overall impact. The unforeseen ramifications of Zomato’s word choice are a warning. In closing, the fifty-year-old writer sheds light on the ability of words to heal wounds or arouse feelings. She promotes attentive communication and makes the argument that intelligent word choice can increase comprehension.

Her caption read as, “On the surface, it seemed like a solution crafted for people with specific dietary requirements, but underneath that layer, they forgot that ‘pure veg’, unlike vegetarian or vegan, has connotations of caste, hierarchy, and untouchability. Communication is a serrated tool; it can be a healing scalpel or a dagger depending on how you use it, and that still doesn’t take into account how good your aim is.”

Khanna’s remarks have sparked discussions about the language used in the food industry and its implications on societal perceptions. Many have echoed her sentiments, calling for greater sensitivity and awareness when labeling food preferences.
