Veteran filmmaker Subhash Ghai recently shared his insights on the evolving entertainment landscape, comparing the world of OTT platforms and traditional cinema. During a discussion, Ghai emphasized that while both mediums offer unique experiences, cinema has always been a larger-than-life celebration. According to Ghai, the magic of cinema lies in its ability to bring people together in theatres, providing a communal experience with grand storytelling.
He stated, “Make emotional connections. Respect each other. Respect the seniors. The more you respect the seniors, the more you will learn. OTT means other than TV. It means over-the-top. Something that is over-the-top, what would you expect from it? OTT means small screen, cinema means big screen. You would have to understand the difference between the two…”
In contrast, OTT platforms cater to individual preferences, offering a more personal and diverse viewing experience. However, he believes that the “big difference” between the two is not just the size of the screen or the mode of delivery, but how filmmakers approach storytelling for each. Ghai advised aspiring filmmakers to understand these differences deeply and create content accordingly.
Despite the rise of OTT, Ghai remains hopeful about the enduring appeal of cinema and its ability to create unforgettable moments.
