Bollywood icons Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol are set to be immortalized with a bronze statue in London’s Leicester Square. This tribute celebrates their roles in the 1995 classic Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (DDLJ), marking the film’s 30th anniversary. The statue will depict a scene from DDLJ, which notably featured Leicester Square, making it the first Bollywood film represented in the ‘Scenes in the Square’ trail. The unveiling is scheduled for Spring 2021, with hopes that both actors will attend the event.
Mark Williams, Director of Destination Marketing at Heart of London Business Alliance, expressed enthusiasm about adding “such titans of international cinema” to the trail. He highlighted DDLJ’s significance as one of the most successful Bollywood films and its unique connection to Leicester Square. Avtar Panesar, Vice President of Special Projects at Yash Raj Films, noted that DDLJ changed the face of the industry and captured hearts worldwide. The statue will join others of cinematic legends like Harry Potter, Batman, Mary Poppins, Laurel & Hardy, and Wonder Woman, celebrating the global impact of Indian cinema.
