Veteran actress Shabana Azmi shared her thoughts on the significance of talent in the entertainment industry, emphasizing that good looks can never compensate for a lack of acting ability. Speaking at an event, she asserted, “Bad actors will remain bad actors,” highlighting that real talent is essential for delivering powerful performances.
Azmi recalled a moment from her career to underline her point, sharing how relieved she felt when Om Puri joined the set of a film. She explained that his commitment and talent brought a sense of professionalism to the project, alleviating her concerns about the production’s quality. She said, “If you are gifted and talented, you’re like a raw diamond; training helps you sparkle. I am a great believer in training and think it does absolutely marvellous things for you.”
She later added, “But if you are a bad actor, I don’t think you can survive. Because, there is an emptiness within bad actors that cannot be filled. She further highlighted the fact that right faces aren’t always synonymous with great acting inner talent. “I feel that many filmmakers have this misconception that if they hire the right face, they can get work done from them. How can you get the work done? You can if and when you have to use only their faces; but when there are dialogues too, it cannot happen.”
Shabana Azmi’s reflections resonate with her illustrious career, where she has consistently chosen roles that showcase depth and substance. Her comments are a timely reminder that while looks may be fleeting, genuine skill is timeless in the world of cinema.
