Kiran Rao’s directorial venture, Laapataa Ladies, has been generating Oscar buzz, but the filmmaker has stepped in to clarify the film’s eligibility. While the heartwarming story resonated with audiences at international film festivals, Rao confirmed that “Laapataa Ladies” was not submitted for Oscar consideration this year.
Rao is overwhelmed by the love and appreciation the film has received and clarified, “Our primary recognition comes from the audience’s response at the box office. If the viewers and the nation appreciate our work, that would be the greatest accolade for us.”
She continued, “There is a specific community tasked with assessing and selecting the finest films of the year, and if our film is deemed worthy, we will submit it for the prestigious Oscars. However, for now, we are eagerly anticipating the recognition we are yet to receive on March 1, 2024, hinting at the film’s release.”
Laapataa Ladies Plot and Release Date
Laapataa Ladies explores the lives of four ladies who embark on a road journey to rediscover themselves and form an unlikely friendship. The film premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) last year and received critical acclaim for its moving portrayal of female empowerment and self-discovery. Laapataa Ladies is set to be released on 1 March 2024 in theatres.
