Kangana Ranaut on Indira Gandhi’s Leadership: ‘Decisions Came from a Place of Ego, Not Maturity’

As the release of her upcoming film Emergency draws near, Kangana Ranaut shared her thoughts on former Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi’s leadership. In a recent statement, Kangana remarked that many of Gandhi’s key decisions did not stem from a mature or thoughtful space but were instead driven by ego.

Emergency, directed and starred in by Kangana herself, focuses on the period during the 1975 Emergency in India, a controversial and critical chapter in the country’s history. Reflecting on Gandhi’s leadership during that time, Kangana explained that she believes Gandhi’s choices were influenced more by personal pride than by political wisdom or maturity. According to her, this aspect of Gandhi’s character is explored in the film, offering viewers a deeper understanding of the leader’s complex personality and the consequences of her decisions.

Kangana said to Bollywood Hungama, “One thing that I really liked about her was that, yes she was privileged, she was coming from a nepotism background, after all she was the PM’s daughter, she held official positions during her father’s term, I mean, what more privilege can one get in politics? She was coming from a privileged space, but she had the determination that I have to prove myself. That determination was worth applauding. She might have gotten a lot of privileges but whenever she was criticised, she proved herself and she came out a complete winner.”

With Emergency set to release soon, the actress’s comments have added to the growing buzz around the film, promising a nuanced and critical depiction of one of India’s most powerful leaders.
