Kabir Khan Reflects on ‘Chandu Champion’ Box Office Performance: “Not the Only Way to Judge a Film”

Director Kabir Khan recently shared his thoughts on the box office failure of his latest film, Chandu Champion. Speaking openly about the film’s underwhelming performance, Khan emphasized that box office numbers should not be the only measure of a movie’s success. He believes that the true impact of a film lies beyond its earnings.

Khan acknowledged that while box office figures are important, they do not fully capture the quality, creativity, or emotional resonance of a movie. He pointed out that many films that are considered classics today were not immediate commercial hits when they were first released. The director said, “Any filmmaker who says that box office doesn’t matter is not speaking the truth; it does. But it’s not the only parameter to judge a film. The most important thing for me is how much the film is remembered and spoken about, after some time passes. With Chandu Champion now and 83 (2021) earlier, there have been repeat viewings on OTT.” He also highlighted that a film’s long-term cultural impact and its ability to connect with audiences are more meaningful indicators of success.

Less than Rs 100 crores were made by Chandu Champion at the worldwide box office. Other films, such as Munjya and the later release of Prabhas’s Kalki 2898 AD, presented competition for the movie.
