Filmmaker Imtiaz Ali’s upcoming project, initially intended to be a movie about the slain singer Amar Singh Chamkila, has evolved into a deeply personal narrative about the director himself. The revelation came to light during discussions about Ali’s latest venture, starring Diljit Dosanjh. The biblical recounting of the story of the deceased singer directed by Imtiaz Ali turns Amar Singh Chamkila into a figure akin to Jesus. It’s his most intimate movie to date. This is the post credit scene of the movie which is doing controversial rounds on the internet right now.
Imtiaz Ali candidly shared that while he set out to create a film centered around Amar Singh Chamkila, the project took a magical turn, becoming more about Ali’s own journey and experiences. The shift reflects a deeply introspective approach by the director.
A plethora of interviews with different individuals he interacted with during his brief career—sometimes even in the back seat of an Ambassador car—can be found with even the most cursory Google searches. There’s the resentful former colleague Tikki, who felt ignored and threw a brick through Chamkila’s office window; there’s the longtime friend and songwriter Swaran Sivia, who set up a meeting between Chamkila and the men threatening his life; and there’s Lal Chand, a dholak player, who just missed dying the day Chamkila and Amarjot were shot. In the film, at least two of them had significant parts.
