Filmmaker Hansal Mehta recently expressed his disappointment over the Film Federation of India’s (FFI) decision, following the exit of Laapataa Ladies from the Oscars 2025 race. Mehta criticized the selection process, questioning the system that overlooks promising films with global appeal.
Directed by Kiran Rao, Laapataa Ladies has been widely praised for its unique storytelling and powerful performances. However, the film was not chosen as India’s official entry for the Oscars, sparking debate within the film industry. Hansal Mehta, known for his outspoken nature, voiced his concerns on social media.
Kiran Rao’s satirical film Laapataa Ladies, India’s official submission for the 97th Academy Awards, did not make the shortlist for Best International Feature. Out of 29 films, including well-known ones like Animal, Aattam, and All We Imagine As Light, the film was chosen by the Film Federation of India (FFI) in September. In a mocking critique of the FFI’s low “strike rate” in choosing Oscar pictures, filmmaker Hansal Mehta voiced his dismay on X. He wrote, “Film Federation of India does it again! Their strike rate and selection of films year after year is impeccable.”
The exclusion of Laapataa Ladies has disappointed many fans and critics alike, reigniting conversations about how Indian films are chosen for the Oscars. The film industry now waits to see what steps will be taken to address these concerns in the future.
