Dev Patel Credits South Korean Cinema and Bollywood for ‘Monkey Man’ Inspiration

Actor Dev Patel has disproved claims of Keanu Reeves starred John Wick influence in his upcoming film “Monkey Man,” and attributed inspiration instead to South Korean cinema and Bollywood. In an interview, Patel clarified that while the film shares action-packed sequences, its roots lie elsewhere.

Patel highlighted the influence of South Korean cinema, particularly citing the works of renowned directors like Bong Joon-ho. He also acknowledged the impact of Bollywood on the film’s narrative and style, emphasizing the rich diversity and storytelling prowess of Indian cinema.

Dev Patel said, “I am a huge fan of the franchise, but this film is born from my love of so much action cinema expanding from Bruce Lee to Sammo Hung to Jet Lee to Jackie Chan to the Korean Cinema and also Bollywood.”

Plot of Monkey Man

Monkey Man will be the directorial debut of Dev Patel. Working the brutal world of underground fight clubs, a kid fights anonymously while harboring a deep rage. Driven by a thirst for revenge, he aspires to overthrow the dishonest upper authorities accountable for his mother’s death and the agony of the under privileged. Some sources suggest that the movie is inspired by the Hindu monkey god Hanuman, who is revered for his bravery and strength.
