In a candid interview with Sky News, veteran Bollywood actress Shabana Azmi sounded the alarm on the worldwide assault on democracy. Expressing grave concern over the erosion of democratic principles, Azmi emphasized the urgent need for action to safeguard fundamental freedoms.
Azmi’s remarks come amidst growing global unrest and political upheaval, with authoritarian regimes increasingly encroaching on democratic institutions. She highlighted the importance of remaining vigilant and actively defending democratic values in the face of mounting threats.
Azmi admitted, “The ordinary citizen who feels that ‘I have absolutely no voice’, has a right to express that voice every five years. And that has to be protected under all circumstances. Democracy has to be preserved because when you attack democratic rights, then you are attacking a citizen’s rights. Of course, religion is used as an instrument for political gain and especially for electoral gain.”
Drawing from her extensive experience in both cinema and activism, Azmi underscored the crucial role artists and activists play in advocating for social justice and preserving democratic norms. Her impassioned plea serves as a rallying cry for citizens worldwide to unite in defense of democracy.
