Bollywood Producing ‘Pro-Government’ Films Prior to Indian Elections, Critics Allege

Amidst the fervor of the Indian elections, Bollywood has come under scrutiny for allegedly churning out “pro-government” films, according to film critics. The main attack is on central government of India – BJP. The industry is accused of producing movies that align with the political agenda of the ruling government.

Critics argue that several recent Bollywood releases exhibit themes and narratives that are supportive of the government in power. These films are seen as portraying a favorable image of the ruling party and its policies, potentially influencing public opinion in the run-up to the elections.

Recently it is announced that upcoming Bollywood movie, Sabarmati Express will be released in the summer of 2024. The term “true events” is coined in the movie, which relates to the incident of February 27, 2002. The unfortunate event claimed the lives of 59 Hindus on board the Sabarmati Express in a fire while it was passing through Godhra, Gujarat, the home state of BJP leader and Prime Minister Narendra Modi. According to the film critic Raja Sen, “It is hard not to see that there are many films suddenly coming out. There is a glut of movies particularly aligned in one direction,” as he told The National.

He continued, “These propaganda movies are hogwash and misleading but at some level, some people may believe these, which is frightening.”

The trend of “pro-government” filmmaking in Bollywood has raised concerns about the blurring lines between art and politics and how it can heavily impact the upcoming elections in India.
