Acclaimed filmmaker Anurag Kashyap has expressed his thoughts on moving from Bollywood to the South Indian film industry. In a recent interview, Kashyap revealed his admiration for the creative freedom and storytelling depth found in South Indian cinema, contrasting it with Bollywood’s constraints. He praised the South for offering a platform to create meaningful stories without the overbearing influence of market pressures.
Known for his bold narratives like Gangs of Wasseypur and Dev.D, Kashyap confessed feeling disheartened by Bollywood’s increasing dependence on formula-driven projects. Bollywood, according to Anurag Kashyap, solely discusses business and margin. The first consideration is how the movie will be marketed. The actual enjoyment of filmmaking ends in such a scenario. For this reason, Anurag is considering moving to the South and abandoning Mumbai, which he can do next year. Anurag claims that the experience of working in the South film industry is completely different and that people there are really passionate about making movies.
He added that he is quite disillusioned and weary of Bollywood. The thoughts here also make him sad. Anurag added that Bollywood hasn’t produced a movie that is comparable to the South Korean film “Manjumal Boys.” He further hinted that in Bollywood, no attempt is made to develop original and distinct stories. “They only talk about remakes.” Anurag Kashyap also made remarks against the conduct of Bollywood producers and actors. According to him, every actor in Hindi movies aspires to be treated like a star, while even the top performers in the South film business treat everyone the same and do not discriminate in any manner.
The director hasn’t made any official move yet, his remarks have sparked speculation about future collaborations with South Indian filmmakers.
