Renowned Indian tabla virtuoso Zakir Hussain passed away on December 15, 2024, at the age of 73 in a San Francisco hospital. His family confirmed that the cause was complications arising from idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, a chronic lung disease. The family of Hussain including his sister Khurshid Aulia, brothers Taufiq and Fazal Qureshi, his wife Antonia Minnecola, a noted Kathak dancer, his children Anisa and Isabella Qureshi, and their families are going through unimaginable grief.
About Zakir Hussain
Born into a musical lineage as the eldest son of legendary tabla player Ustad Alla Rakha, Hussain began his professional career at the age of 12. He quickly gained international acclaim for his exceptional skill and innovative approach to the tabla, collaborating with artists such as George Harrison, Yo-Yo Ma, and Herbie Hancock.
Throughout his career, Hussain received numerous accolades, including four Grammy Awards and India’s second-highest civilian award, the Padma Vibhushan. He was also known for co-founding the fusion band Shakti with guitarist John McLaughlin in 1973, blending Indian classical music with jazz elements.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences, describing Hussain as a “true genius” who revolutionized Indian classical music. His passing marks the end of an era in the world of Indian classical music, leaving behind a rich legacy that transcends genres and continues to inspire musicians globally.
