Actor Vivek Oberoi recently revealed that he turned down a film offered by his father, veteran actor Suresh Oberoi, early in his career. During a candid interview, Vivek shared that the decision was driven by a “crisis of conscience.” He felt it was essential to build his identity in Bollywood without leveraging his father’s name or influence.
Vivek revealed, “When my father wanted to launch me, I had a crisis of conscience. I didn’t want my father to invest the money to launch me; I wanted it to be more on merit.” He explained that while he respected his father’s efforts to launch him, he was adamant about earning success on his own terms. He later said, “He was worried, but he respected me as a man that day. My father was making a film for me with Abbas-Mustan, and I walked away from that opportunity. I struggled for 18 months after that, faced a lot of rejection, but I am proud of that choice.” Eventually he landed a role in Ram Gopal Varma’s Company (2002), which became his breakthrough and earned him critical acclaim. During the work, Ram Gopal Verma also assured him, “He told me, ‘If I don’t like what you’re doing, I’ll tell you. If I don’t say anything, it means I like what you’re doing.’ That gave me double the energy to perform.”
The actor described the experience as challenging yet rewarding. He acknowledged the industry’s struggles but expressed pride in staying true to his values.
