The UK has selected the British-Indian filmmaker Sandhya Suri’s film Santosh, starring Shahana Goswami and Sunita Rajwar, as its official entry for the Oscars 2024. Directed by Harry Patel, Santosh has captivated audiences with its heartfelt storytelling and exceptional performances. The film sheds light on the journey of an Indian woman struggling with societal pressures, exploring themes of identity and cultural conflict. The film is doing rounds and getting compliments from around the world since its world premiere at Cannes Film Festival in 2024.
Earlier this year, Santosh made its world premiere at the 77th Cannes Film Festival in the Un Certain Regard section. Films that tell distinctive, frequently politically or socially significant stories are typically featured in this section, and Santosh was no different. Both reviewers and viewers responded favorably to the film’s thematic focus on women’s empowerment and violence against caste.
India, on the other hand, has officially submitted Laapataa Ladies by Kiran Rao for the same category. The film, which stars Ravi Kishan, Pratibha Ranta, and Nitanshi Goel, offers a humorous but moving story.
