Prasoon Joshi Reveals Why He Has Stopped Writing for Bollywood

Prasoon Joshi, the renowned lyricist and screenwriter, recently opened up about why he hasn’t been writing for Bollywood films lately. Joshi, who is also the Chairman of the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC), explained that his role in the CBFC has affected his creative writing pursuits. He believes that his responsibilities as CBFC Chairman require him to maintain a neutral and unbiased perspective, which has “restrained his pen.”

Joshi expressed that, as the head of the CBFC, he often has to make tough decisions regarding film certifications, which makes it difficult for him to immerse himself in the creative side of writing. He admitted by saying, “I had accepted the responsibility of the Chairperson of the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) at a time when there were many challenges. My integrity and honesty demanded that I maintained a certain distance from work that is to be certified so that I remain unbiased. That led me to restrain my pen in the last few years. It was a phase, and I can see myself gradually moving on to what I love, which is writing and creation.”

It’s difficult for the Padma Shri laureate to juggle his responsibilities as the president of the Censor Board and a writer, he continues. “CBFC comes with challenges and obligations. I took up the position during a period of widespread criticism of the certification agency. I made an effort to bring about as much good change as possible, whether it was by digitizing or streamlining procedures or by finding a balance between artistic freedom and social conscience. It did cost a lot to accomplish all of that without needless conflict. Furthermore, it was and still is a sensitive task to view fellow artists’ work through the prism of accreditation, he adds.

The lyricist is “now gradually exploring newer genres,” however. “I am working on some more musicals, web series, and a book,” he continues.
