Anubhav Sinha Discusses Kandahar Hijacking Film with Vishal Bhardwaj: “He Approved My Take on It”

Anubhav Sinha, known for his thought-provoking films, recently revealed that he consulted acclaimed filmmaker Vishal Bhardwaj regarding his upcoming project centered on the Kandahar hijacking incident. Sinha, who is venturing into the retelling of the traumatic event, sought Bhardwaj’s opinion on his interpretation of the hijacking. To his relief, Bhardwaj, a respected figure in the industry, approved Sinha’s approach, giving him the confidence to proceed.

The Netflix series is scheduled to premiere on August 29. It is based on the 1999 hijack of an Indian aircraft by five terrorists on December 24, 1999, forty minutes after it took off from Kathmandu. In the previous year, Bhardwaj disclosed that Prime Video had canceled his movie about the Kandahar hijacking due to political turmoil surrounding “Tandav”.

When asked if he had a conversation with Bhardwaj, Sinha replied that he had a meeting with the “Haider” director and elaborated on his account.

“After I took on this, I got to know about Vishal’s. He is a friend; we meet often and share our love for cinema. We spoke and I told him the lens I was using, and he approved of it and he really liked it. He reads all my scripts, I read most of his scripts before they are made, so we share our work with each other. In this case, it was not fair on me to encroach upon things he had created. Also, it would colour my lens.”

Shergill, the Vice President of Content of Netflix India admitted that “There was a common passion to tell the story and to do it in the most defining. Every project has to have right people come together and Anubhav was a large missing piece of that project.”
